Item Description

Two sharp, luminous, brassy, pyritohedrons, to 2.3 cm, are very aesthetically set in the large sculptural marly limestone matrix on this very fine specimen from this famous locale. The piece displays well without aid. The striking striated faces, modified corners and embedded smaller pyrites add real pizzazz to this exceptional piece. Pyrites from La Rioja are one of the most easily recognizeable and iconic display specimens in the world. They are highly attractive, and arguably the finest crystallized representations of the species. This locality is mined almost exclusively for its pyrite crystals, which are world famous and well known among collectors. Note that in the process of excavation, some of the crystals probably came off the matrix and are thus reattached (as is the case on this piece). This is definitely a superior piece of above average quality, that you would generally see at wholesale. Ex Raul Sanabria Collection.
