Item Description

Lustrous, sharp, light brown, hexagonal vanadinite prisms, to 9 mm, are richly and aesthetically scattered on the matrix plate of densely intergrown, glassy, translucent, elongated nailhead calcite rhombs. These came out in the 1950s to 70s, with none since. See the excellent article in the November-December, 2008 Mineralogical Record, Vol. 39, No. 6. The piece has a fine provenance, having been in the John Sinkankas Collection, who acquired the piece in 1966. John was a renowned author, artist, mineralogist, bibliophile, bookseller, field collector, lapidarist and gemologist, who died in 2002. See his biography in the Mineralogical Record Biographical Archive: http://www.minrec.org/labels.asp?colid=1837. John's unique catalogue style and number is noted on the piece. Very fine and uncommon combination material in this quality.
