Item Description

A seldom seen specimen of Dioptase from Peru. The label actually originally stated it was from Colombia, but was later corrected to Peru, with no further locality information given. It could possibly be from the Cobrellama Deposit in the Ica Department, but it's hard to say. Small, VERY gemmy, brilliant emerald green prismatic trigonal crystals of Dioptase can be seen all over the specimen associated with modified rhombic gemmy Calcite crystals on matrix. This is an interesting an unusual reference specimen that would make a great addition to a suite of copper species, South American minerals or just worldwide Dioptases. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#7821). Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record).
