Item Description

Pinakiolite is an exceptionally rare magnesium manganese antimony borate that is only found in three places in the world, including the type locality in Langban, Sweden. This prolific locality has produced the type specimens of DOZENS Of mineral species, and the only example of the Pinakiolite that I've seen are from Langban. The species gets its name from the Greek word "pinakion", which menas small tablet, and "lithos" which means stone, in allusion to the thin tabular shape of the crystals. This is a classic and fine quality specimen of Pinakiolite featuring flatted, metallic, deep reddish-black colored crystals / bands of Pinakiolite in granular matrix. Attention rare mineral collectors or collectors who like species from the type locality! Pick this one up, as they are almost never seen on the market. This is the only piece of this species that we have to offer. This piece comes from an old East Coast collection, originally in the collection of J. N. Trainer, and with an historic label from the legendary mineral dealer, Hugh A. Ford. Since the label has Ford's New York address it dates to 1946-1957.
