Item Description

A classic example of the famous electric yellow colored Sulfur crystals from Agrigento (Girgenti), Sicily, Italy. The piece shows sharp TEXTBOOK crystal faces with fine luster and good gemminess! The largest Sulfur crystal measures 2.0 cm long. The MOST interesting aspect of the piece is that the Sulfur has filled in somewhat hollow cavities where Calcite has pseudomorphed after preexisting Aragonite, forming these lovely "diamond"-shaped areas. Nearly damage free on the display side, save a few contatcs. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#6214). Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record). Valued at $1250 for the aesthetics, the pseudomorphs and quality of the crystals. For reference, the species should now be spelled S-U-L-F-U-R as both the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry along with the British Royal Society of Chemistry adopted this spelling in the 1990s (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulfur#Spelling_and_etymology)
