Item Description

Most specimens of these famous Axinites were found during the mid to late 1990 's and then stopped altogether. This piece hosts very sharp, highly lustrous, gemmy to translucent, clove brown colored "wedge"-shaped crystals of Axinite-(Fe) measuring up to 2.2 cm on matrix. Many of the Axinites are doubly-terminated and really look beautiful when backlit. The piece is in great shap all the way around as you can see from the photos. The crystals are incredibly smooth and sharp with good internal gemminess. I don 't need to tell you that in today's market, this is a hard to find specimen from an important locality. From the worldwide collection of famed Italian mineral collector, field collector and author, Francesco Bedogne of Sondrio, Italy (Collection #1642). Bedogne wrote dozens of articles and several books about the mineralogy of Italian Alpine localities such as Val Bregaglia, Val Masino, Val Codera, Val Spluga, Valtellina and the famous Val Malenco. He was also the founder of the Valtellinese Mineralogical Institute. Valued at $950.
