Item Description

San Juan Mountains rhodochrosites are a Colorado and US classic, but specimens from the more obscure and extinct Monarch Mine near Ouray are rare and are seldom on the market. This is a fine, lustrous and translucent, pretty rose-red rhomb. Clusters of tiny pyrites are a typical and nifty accessory. The front, right and back sides are pristine. The left side, with drusy quartz, is partially contacted, but is out-of-sight. Classic and excellent rhodo from this mine. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 9681 with a May, 1982 collection date on the Perky box label. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record).
