Item Description

Classic, old-time and rich rhodochrosite from the famous mines at Butte. Intergrown, pretty salmon-pink, lustrous, moderately translucent rhombs form an aesthetic mounded small cabinet. The impresssive large rhomb is 2.4 cm on the diagonal. Scattered clusters of tiny pyrite crystals are a typical and classic accent. The couple of noted bruised crystals in the interior are certainly only a modest detraction to this excellent, rich and showy Butte rhodo. It displays well from two directions. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 708. Kay acquired this piece from well-known California dealer Sol Shale in the 1950s, while the mines were still active. Read his biography in the Mineralogical Biographical Archive at: http://www.minrec.org/labels.asp?colid=814. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record). valued $500-750
