Item Description

A RARE and rich large ore specimen of slabbed, unpolished mohawkite, quartz and calcite from the namesake Type Locality. Mohawkite is a RARE mixture of algodonite, domeykite and arsenic-rich copper (and possibly further species) (MINDAT). It is unique to two mines in Copper Country, with the Mohawk Mine being the Type Locality. Massive large specimens, such as this, are RARE because the rich ore was smelted or as seen generally today, it is polished as a lapidiary object to bring out the rich golden-coppery color. The bit of calcite (fluorescent) at the top adds contrast. Hefty rich ore at 1303 grams or 2.9 pounds mass. 8 smaller 5 mm slabs could be cut from this piece. Rare old large mohawkite from the Bob Hauck Collection.
