Description:This material is known by two trade names in the gem world: Cosmic Obsidian and Snowflake Obsidian. The material is a natrually ocurring volcanic glass which contains white spherical "snowflake"-like inclusions of Cristobalite which is a tetragonal Silicon Dioxide (chemically identical to Quartz). Typically, this type of Obsidian is opaque, but we recently purchased a small parcel of excellent quality stones that are actually translucent ! This "Pear Cabochon" cut stone has a lovely internal smoky color when backlit, and is filled with many beautiful "snowflake" inclusions. A great stone of this hard to find material.
