Item Description

Hematite is very uncommon from the famous deposits around Ilfeld, source of the world's finest manganite specimens. Lustrous botryoids cover the hefty hematite and quartz ore matrix. Undoubtedly old-time material. The labels say Silberberg, Ilfeld. MINDAT lists a Silberberg in Kleinreinsdorf, Greiz, Thuringia, but not in Ilfeld. MINDAT does not list hematite or limonite from that locality. This piece resembles hematite from Netzberg, Ilfeld, that is shown in MINDAT. The Seaman Museum at Michigan Tech acquired the 15,000 piece collection of Professor William Heinrich from the University of Michigan. Ex Dr. Barratt Phillips Collection. An excellent piece with a fine provenance.
