Item Description

Martite, an uncommon variety of hematite pseudomorphs after magnetite and magnetite are both VERY RARE from the famous and extinct polymetallic Park City District. MINDAT lists hematite and magnetite, but not martite. No photos are shown in the District photo gallery. This is an impresssive, large and hefty two-sided combination ore specimen from the Dr. Barratt Phillips Collection. One side features large, lustrous, metallic-gray compound pseudomorphs of martite after magnetite crystals, to 3.0 cm, accented with drusy quartz. The back side is festooned with sharper, more highly lustrous magnetite crystals, to 8 mm. BOTH sides are magnetic. The smaller crystals are much more so. If from Park City, this is a VERY RARE and desirable large combination. Martite and magnetite are present in the Iron Springs District of Iron County, Utah and MINDAT does show photos of similar examples. The specimen could be from the Iron Springs District. Either way this is a significant and important large old-time Utah combination. Hefty ore at 1997 grams or 4.4 pounds mass.
