Item Description

Cuprite is very uncommon from the historic mines of Copper Country. The hefty sculptural arborescent cluster of subhedral copper crystals has been partially pseudomorphed by rich brick-red cuprite. The remaining greenstone matrix adds pizzazz and color contrast. Undoubtedly old-time and rare combination pseudo material from here, but no proof. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 7345 and acquired in San Mateo from Western Minerals (Gene Schlepp) in 1974. There is a 2009 photo by Rock Currier of the piece in the MINDAT Michigan cuprite photo gallery. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record). A must for the species or locality collector.
