Item Description

This material comes from high in the Austrian Alps and is basically a mixture of medium grey to nearly black Dolomite which is associated with nearly white Magnesite. Pinolite gets it name from the Magnesite formations that bear a resemblance to the shape of pine kernels / pine nuts. The material is very durable and easily polished, and people like to use it a decorative stone. It rarely shows up in the US market, but we picked up a small selection when we were in Sainte Marie aux Mines back in June. As a historical note, the quarry that produces this material dates back to 1641, and is beloved by the locals for its beautiful form and patterns. This "Cushion Cabochon" cut gem is a great representation of this classic and rarely seen material. A great piece to pick up priced at just over $1 per carat for the starting bid.
