Item Description

A supremely exotic, pristine and RARE 360-degree calcite from this obscure Mumbai (Bombay) area basalt quarry. A dramatic stacked tapered cluster of lustrous, translucent, flattened calcite rhombs is elegantly set on the shard of basalt matrix covered with drusy quartz. The rhombs resemble a striking auger with the large rhombs projecting out of the central column like auger blades. "The Quarry at Dahisar is remarkable for the quality and variety of its calcite specimens. Calcite occurs here in two generations, and forms scalednohedrons, combinations of scalenohedrons and rhombohedrons, and combinations of rhombohedrons and prisms." (MINDAT). This surreal piece combines the overall scalenohedral form of the flattened rhombs. Dahisar Quarry calcite fluoresces red or pink, unlike those from almost any other Deccan Trap calcite, adding even more pizzazz. While known, calcites from here are VERY RARE and are seldom on the market. Ex Cynthia Payne Calcite Collection. Valued by the former dealer at $895 and worth it. A MUST for the calcite, locality or fluorescent collector.
