Item Description

A rarely seen specimen of Apatite with Rhodolite Garnet from Yancey County, North Carolina. The label unfortunately did not give a more specific locality. With that said, the piece hosts a sharp, prismatic, blue Apatite crystal measuring 1.1 cm associated with purplish-red Rhodolite Garnet and minor golden Mica on Calcite matrix. The Garnets are mostly partial / incomplete crystals, but there are a few tiny crystals on the back that show excellent trapezohedral form. It's certainly a rarely seen association specimen from this remote part of western North Carolina which is actually home to Mount Mitchell, the tallest mountain in the eastern United States at 6,684 feet. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#). Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017).
