Item Description

A rarely seen MATRIX specimen of the classic Cobaltites from the famous locality at Hakansboda, Sweden. This locality dates back the the 15th Century, and has produced the world's finest Cobaltite and Glaucodot specimens which are chemically very similar. Good Cobaltite crystals are hard enough to find, but to have a specimen with a crystal on matrix is a real treat. The crystal itself measures 4 mm and is notably sharp and very lustrous with smooth brilliant metallic silvery-white faces. A lot of Cobaltites from this locality have a matte luster and "dingy" looking faces, but this one really shines and stands out against others I've seen from the locality. The habit is what I would call a pseudo-pyritohedron. Many people think that Cobaltite crystals belong to the isometric system, like a lot of basic sulfides, but they're actually orthorhombic. Upon close inspection, I can't see any damage to the crystal, but it does have one face with a slightly uneven growth. Valued at $650.
