Item Description

A dramatic, three-dimensional, large cabinet sized specimen featuring incredibly sharp and well-formed "milky" white doubly-terminated Quartz crystals measuring up to 8.8 cm from the lesser known Ohio Mine in the famous amphitheater just east of the town of Ouray in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. Hundreds of small hexagonal crystals are growing around the larger predominant crystals, and gives the specimen somewhat of a two-tone appearance. Lastly and arguably most importantly, there is a large hollow "cast" of Quartz which has replaced preexisting Anhydrite than spans the width of the specimen. Additionally, there are many small but attractive "casts" of Quartz replacing scalenohedral "dogtooth" Calcite crytals on the piece as well. The piece is essentially a complete "floater" as it is virtually crystallized all the way around, and I really can't find a point of attachment. This is one of the showiest Quartz specimens from the Ohio Mine that I've seen. Considering there are multiple generations of crystallization combied with the wonderfully aesthetic form, it's more than a Quartz from Colorado, it's an eye-catching display specimen with worldwide appeal. Specimens from this area are not common on the market, especially in this size with such amazing aesthetics and a HUGE "cast" after Anhydrite! Ex Brian Kosnar Collection. Valued at $1,850.
