Item Description

Gypsum specimens are known from this famous old extinct antimony mine, but included specimens, such as this are EXTREMELY RARE. A striking, sharp, glassy, lustrous, partially transparent, twinned, terminated tabular gypsum is richly included. The inclusions could be cervantite or clays. You can look deeply into some of the water-clear prism faces, while other faces have only a transparent outer rind. Complete all-around and essentially pristine. The two noted contacts have only trivial bruising. The mine closed in 1948, but specimens are still recovered periodically. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 8548 and acquired in the late 1970s in a trade from an Italian who self-collected the piece. Selensulphur is not a species or varietal. Fascinating gypsum and rare style from the locale. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record).
