Item Description

A dramatically sculptural, 3-dimensional large floater crystallized copper from this famous Arizona district. The brick-red cuprite coating really enhances the color of this piece. The artistic two-sided freeform piece, with vague arborescent form, is composed of intergrown euhedral to subhedral, tetrahexahedral to spinel-twinned crystals. Portions of the specimens are composed of very sharp tetrahexahedral crystal, adding real pizzazz. The voids in this piece are surreal, adding a stunning visual aspect! The crystals are much sharper on the 'A' side, but this striking large piece has multiple fine display views. Ajo specimens are far less common from those from Bisbee or Morenci and other famous Arizona localities. Choice older Ajo copper from the Kay Robertson Collection # 464. Kay acquired this classic in the early 1950 or earlier, during the active mining period. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record). Valued at $1250-1500.
