Item Description

A fantastic and RARE large polished slab of spherulitic jasper from an unknown locale in Madagascar. The surreal multi-hued banded, layered spheroids look like weird "eyes" or pisolites, a sedimentary rock, typically calcium carbonate, formed by concretionary layers. Pisolites are over 2 mm in thickness. The striking lighter colored spherules at the top, distinctive layering of the spherules and scattered darker areas, some with cavities and some lined with microcrystalline quartz add incredible color and pizzazz to this dramatic slab. The trade name on the tag is Ocean Jasper, due to its resemblance to oolites (less than 2 mm in diameter) and pisolites. Ex Kay Robertson Collection, with no collection number. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record).
