Item Description

Mineral specimens are RARE from this old mine, one of the first large scale Cumbria iron mines worked from about 1840 and closed at the end of 1931 (MINDAT). Sparkly pyrite microcrystals are festooned on the sculptural large mounded matrix of knobs of lustrous, translucent, cream-colored calcite rhombs. The calcite on the periphery fluoresces a rich pink. Complete all-around and nearly pristine, with only a few of modest interior bruises. Fascinated and RARE, probably old-time 360-degree combination calcite from the Tom Wolfe Calcite Collection. Comes with a Lazard Cahn label, dating from calculated 1908-1940.
