Item Description

High quality sphalerite specimens are RARE from this famous Southern Illinois fluorite mine, even though sphalerite was mined for zinc at various times. Beautiful, gem sky-blue fluorite cubes, to 1.0 cm, have lightly frosted faces and occasional purple edge phantoms. The cubes are richly peppered on one half of the impressive large mounded 360-degree specimen of intergrown complex sphalerite crystals. Crystals reach a large 4.0 cm and some have areas of classic rubyjack color. In great shape overall, nearly pristine, with just a bit of periphery wear on one side. Ex Ross Lillie Collection # 0904 and recovered during advance mining in Septermber, 1992. A note on Ross's label states: "Fine group of complex sphalerite crystals." The piece has mulitple fine display views.
