Item Description

RARE old-time malachite from an obscure German locale. Bubbly rich green malachite botryoids fill two well-placed sculptural vugs in the gossan matrix. Wrexen is a small village, that was known for iron and copper mining and smelting in the Middle Ages (Wikipedia). There is also an active quarry in the area, the Wachenfeld Quarry, that MINDAT lists for malachite. This piece is undoubtedly from an old long extinct copper mining locality. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 8069 and acquired from the Cisneros' in February, 1977. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017). RARE German malachite!
