Item Description

An outstanding, sharp, 1.8 x 1.7 x 1.6 cm, lustrous, silver-metallic, pseudopyritohedral cobaltite crystal is dramatically set atop iridescent chalcopyrite matrix on this exceptional old-time example from this historic copper, then cobalt mining area. Mining started in the early 1400s for copper. The main mining period was from 1702 until 1873, with minor mining during World War I (MINDAT). Complete all-around and in excellent shape. A contacted prism face is mostly out-of-sight in the multiple fine display views and the bit of noted corner wear in some views is certainly only a modest detraction to this superlative matrix example from this famed old locale, noted for some of the finest cobaltite specimens in the world. Valued at $1500-2500. A major piece from an old family collection in Europe!
