Item Description

Intergrown lustrous, translucent, hexagonal calcite prisms are nicely accented by a 1.0 cm pocket of sparkly silvery lollingite microcrystals on this sculptural and aesthetic combination old-timer from the historic mines at St. Andreasberg. The dominating tower-like prism is 2.8 x 2.5 cm. Lollingite is a ubiquitous species at St. Andreasberg. Pink calcite fluorescence. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 1490 and acquired at Christmas in 1959. Kay assembled an important suite of classics and rarities from this famed district. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record). See the Mineralogical Record St. Andreasberg Special Issue, May-June, 2017, Vol. 48, No. 3. The is piece undoubtedly dates to the 1800s, as the last mine closed in 1910. Excellent combination material from this famed locale.
