Item Description

RARE and HUGE (!!!) sharp pyrope garnet from Bavaria. The textbook floater dodecahedron has a moderately lustrous green chlorite coating, adding color and contrast. Scattered bruising reveals the underlying red color of the pyrope. Probably from the Silbergrube, Waidhaus but the label does not specify, and sadly it has lost any other labels including Kay's own (it was in a box of uncatalogued acquisitions from germany from the 1960s or 1970s that we found behind a cabinet when we packed the collection. This is an aplite quarry which works the remains of a now largely eroded granitic pegmatite. The locality is known for a large variety of rare phosphates (MINDAT). Ex Kay Robertson Collection with no number, but we will provide a standard collection label to document this. The German label with the piece has a 1965 date. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017). Very rare, perhaps UNIQUE German pyrope. over 850 grams mass (over 2 pounds in weight!)
