Item Description

A distinctive and attractive Spinel thumbnail from the famous Amity locality, which produced single Spinel crystals over 300 pounds!! This piece features a sharp and well-formed octahedron with a very dark steel blue (vritually black) hue sitting on moss green Pyroxene. The Spinel crystal measures 1.2 cm, and is not just a basic octahedron, but actually shows some attractive, smooth modifying faces. These pieces are some of the most well-known Spinels from the United States. The piece is clearly an older specimen because it came from an old East Coast collection, and comes with an historic label from the legendary mineral dealer, Hugh A. Ford. Since the label has Ford's New York address, that dates it 1946-1957, but the piece itself is most likely even older.
