Item Description

Axinite specimens are very uncommon from Japan. This very fine and very rare combination old-timer is dominated by a striking, large, sharply terminated, translucent crystal.Glassy and translucent, well crystallized, clove brown crystals of ferroaxinite, to 6.2 cm in length, rise skyward above their matrix. Axinites as fine as this from Dal'negorsk are infinitely more rare than those from the Polar Urals. Comes with a label from Larry Conklin. This is old material, seldom seen for sale in this quality. With crystals this size, the specimen is easily worth $1000-2000. MINDAT lists two mines in Kyushu Region, that hosts these species - photos on MINDAT seem to confirm this as Obira Mine, and to my eye the crystals look different than most larger, more robust and less translucent crystals I have seen from Toroku. Old specimen, ex Larry Conklin collection
