Item Description

The Black Rock Quarry (Ben Hogan Quarry) is well known for its beautiful pink Dolomite specimens, but it also has produced some attractive Calcites, which are most often seen on Dolomite matrix. I recently picked up a small parcel of Calcites from Black Rock, collected by a local rockhound. This lovely thumbnail specimen features a few sharp, lustrous, translucent, pale golden color scalenohedron of Calcite measuring 0.9 cm sitting atop a complex crystal group of Sphalerite which are studded by iridescent, golden sharp Chalcopyrite crystals. When the Sphalerite is strongly backlit, it's actually slightly gemmy! No major damage to speak of, and it's not common to see Calcites ON Sphalerite from this locality. A great piece for a thumbnail collector, a Calcite collector, or a collector of specimens from Black Rock.
