Item Description

A really cool and eye-catching Calcite specimen from this famous mine in southern Illinois. This piece was mined by Ross Lillie in the Rosiclare Level of the mine. The main crystal is a steep scalenohedral "dog tooth" crystal, but almost certainly in more than one generation based upon the layered growth and the change in coloring. The main crystal at the top of the piece is undamaged and fine quality, and is actually regrown / healed (re-healed) on the base, so with the exception of one spot on the back, the piece is crystallized all the way around and nearly a complete "floater". Small purple gemmy Fluorite cubes make for a great touch. The piece even shows a soft blue fluorescence under UV light. It's a wonderful Calcite for the locality, and really stands out as good piece for anybody who collects this material. From the collection of Ross Lille (Specimen #RCL0893) and valued at $1,800 for its uniquness, quality, aesthetics and visceral appeal.
