Item Description

Goethite is not often seen in fine crystallized examples. It's typically found in cryptocrystalline or even amourphous specimens, so a peice like this is very good quality for the species. A few small vugs are packed with brilliant, shimmering, semi-metallic, golden-brown colored crystals of Geothite in host rock matrix. This might be a "black rock" but these Goethites are some of the finest crystallized examples of the species out there, and rarely seen on the market. It should be noted that this mineral was named after the famous German philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and the correct pronunciation of the species is GER-tite (with a hard "g" like gold). Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#13148). Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017).
