Item Description

The mineral Carpathite is actually an organic hydrocarbon, that is to say it's a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and the chemical formula is C24H12. The species used to be called Coronene, Karpatite or Pendletonite. The former mercury producing locality at Picacho Mine (Los Picachos) is arguably the best known locality for Carpathite. This miniature sized specimen hosts attractive, thin, elongated, bright yellow monoclinic crystals of Carpathite lying flat on matrix. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Carpathite is that it shows a GORGEOUS bright blue fluorescence under both LW and SW UV light.
