Item Description

Sharp, lustrous, metallic-gray textbook tetrahedral tetrahedrite crystals, to a large 1.6 cm, are festooned on the undulating, 3-dimensional matrix plate on this exceptional old-time combination specimen. Fine quality tetrahedrite specimens are rare from the historic mines at St. Andreasberg. A few quartz points and patches of tiny brassy pyritohedrons are excellent accessories. The underlying matrix is composed of sphalerite, pyrite, quartz and galena. A classic, very fine old-time combination rarity from the Kay Robertson Collection # 4300 and acquired in the mid-1960s. Formerly in the Georg Jasker Collection. Kay assembled a nice suite of classics and rarities from this famed district. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record). See the Mineralogical Record St. Andreasberg Special Issue, May-June, 2017, Vol. 48, No. 3. The is piece undoubtedly dates to the 1800s, as the last mine closed in 1910. Documented specimens from this mine are RARE.
