Amity spinels are an old-time, desirable New York classic species. Collecting started in the early 1800s and spinels to 300 pounds were recovered! New specimens are seldom on the market today, as the area is being suburbanized (MINDAT). A 3.0 cm spinel is jauntily perched atop the blocky marble matrix nicely accented with small sharp spinels on one side. Part of the large black spinel octahedron is all there with sharp faces and high luster with the rest being attached to matrix. This remains a very showy and highly representative old-time New York classic. Valued $750
