Item Description

A very sharp tetragonal floater mellite crystal from Hungary. Mellite is a rare organic compound, an aluminium mellitate (benzene hexacarboxylate) hydrate and is a rare secondary mineral in lignite deposits. This large grayish-brown crystal has resinous luster. SW UV blue fluorescence and green LW UV fluorescence. Some of the very finest examples come from this lignite mine and this is an excellent large crystal from the David Burgess Collection, for whom Burgessite is named.
