Calcite w/ strange overgrowths (RARE old South Dakota)

A bizarre looking, RARE style, old-time calcite from the Black Hills. The lustrous, translucent, colorless, dogtooth calcite crystals on this sculptural plate have surreal brown secondary overgrowths of iron oxides. Some of the fantastic pealed back overgrowths look like flower buds starting to bloom! From an East Coast collection and undoubtedly old-time material, but no proof. Very rare, possibly unique style calcite from the Black Hills and for South Dakota. Nothing in the MINDAT Calcite Photo Gallery for South Dakota vaguely resembles this very strange calcite.
