Item Description

Manganese oxides are known from this well-known Wisconsin open pit and deep underground iron mine, that operated from 1882 to 1963, but specimens are RARE (MINDAT). Moderately lustrous clusters of gray-black bubbly botryoids (grape ore) cover the large undulating face of the massive vuggy manganese oxide matrix. MINDAT lists several manganese oxides, but not Psilomelane, an obsolete group name for hard black Manganese Oxides. Formerly in the Charles Noll Collection # 4437, a prominent Wisconsin collector, who passed away in 2014. RARE and desirable large old-time material from this famous mine from the Dr. Barratt Phillips Collection. Mass is 7.7 pounds or 3.5 kilos. A MUST for the locality or species collector.
