Item Description

Classic gem heliodor from this famous locale. Thumbnail gem crystals are RARE from here. Most such crystals are larger. This gem yellow-green cutie exhibits the classic complex etching noted for the locale and is doubly terminated. This locality is world-famous for these highly unusual beryl crystals, most recovered between the mid-1980s to mid-90s. An excellent 2016 article in a Rocks & Minerals issue by John White, former Curator of Gems and Minerals at the Smithsonian provides an in-depth examination of this fantastic etched heliodor crystal phenomenon at the Volodarsk-Volynskii. 29.81 carats or nearly 6 grams mass. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 11150 and acquired from Ikon Mining at the MSSC Show in 1986. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record).
