Item Description

RARE, rich and excellent large combination specimen from this well-known ancient Pb-Zn mining district worked until 1954. Rare drusy quartz covers the sculptural matrix and aesthetically hosts: "balls" of lustrous, jet-black sphalerite crystals to 2.5 cm; dramatically contrasting bladed balls of white barite; a rich covering of bright metallic-gray galena cuboctahedrons; a few clusters of tiny brassy pyritohedrons on the left side; and a few scattered clusters of tiny quartz points. This outstanding combination old-timer has a fine provenance, having been in the private collection of Anton Berger, a prominent Austrian dealer whose label dates from about 1929 to the 1950s. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 3436 and acquired from Willard Perkin in the mid-1960s. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record). A REMARKABLE, rich and rare large combination with several rare species from this noted locale.
