Item Description

Striking axe head calcites are known from this less well-known Derbyshire quarry, but are quite rare and are seldom on the market in the United States. This is an aesthetic and impressive 360-degree, lustrous and translucent example with rich amber color and typical form for the locale. Axe head calcite twins are certainly one of the more striking of the four calcite twin forms. And they are definitely less common than other forms. The sharp knife edge terminations are most distinctive and the twinning plane angle between the C-axes is 127 degree 30 minutes. Complete all-around and pristine. Contacting at the base on both sides, where other crystals once lay is noted, but has no damage, per se. Modest ghostly white fluorescence. A MUST for the calcite or locality collector. Valued $1000-1250
