Spinel is a wonderful gemstone. It's really durable and comes in a wide range of colors. Before material started coming out of Mogok, it was very difficult to obtain good gem quality Spinels. Over the years, we've seen some really pretty Ruby Spinels out of this area, but a large percentage of Spinels out there are not red. Here we have a dark blue Spinel that was mined circa 2005. This "Oval Step" cut stone has an almost silvery metallic quality to it in certain lighting. In my experience, but is rare in Spinels, and this stone looks especially nice in sunlight. It does have some slight inclusions, but if you were to set this gem into jewelry, you wouldn't even notice them. The retail price on this gem is $565.00.
