Item Description

A really cool, unusual and eye-catching Calcite specimen from this famous mine in souther Illinois. This piece was mined in July of 1992 by Ross Lillie in an area called the Bahama Pod in the "Timber Drift" of the Rosiclare Level of the mine. The label indicates that the piece was found in the north face of the Bahama Pod (Bahama Ore Body). I honestly don't remember seeing a Calcite quite like this from the Denton Mine. The piece formed in steep scalenohedral crystals, but almost certainly in more than one generation based upon the layered growth and the change in coloring. The main crystal at the top of the piece is undamaged and fine quality, while the secondary crystal which sits perpendicularly across is actually regrown / healed (re-healed), so with the exception of one tiny spot on the back, the piece is crystallized all the way around! It's a remarkable Calcite for the locality, and really stands out as a special and unique piece for anybody who collects this material. From the collection of Ross Lille (Specimen #RCL0893) and valued at $1,500 for its uniquness and visceral appeal.
