Item Description

Vivianite is not commonly found in Brazil, but the locality at Cabeca do Cachorro (in remote far northwestern Brazil) has produced some impressive specimens in very limited quantity over the years. Most people think of gem pegmatite minerals when it comes to Brazil, but these specimens are formed in phosphatic concretions / nodules, and are cracked open to reveal their gem crystal treasures. This piece is a superb example of this elusive and beautiful material featuring a richly packed cluster of very sharp, lustrous, deep blue-green colored, monclinic prisms of Vivianite measuring up to 4.2 cm which are associated with a few minor gemmy green crystals of Ludlamite on the side of the piece. These specimens are notoriously difficult to photograph, and the piece truly looks better in person than the photos might indicate. Overall, the piece is a fine condition, and the only real damage is seen around the outer edge of the nodule where it was opened to expose the crystals within. If you collect minerals of Brazil or phosphate species, this is one of the best examples of this material that we've ever had to offer, and would make a great addition to your collection. The piece comes from noted Brazilian mineral collector Paolo Matioli and comes with this hand-written label. Valued in the inventory at $2,500 a few years ago, and could arguably be more today.
