Item Description

Sinhalite is a unique stone, and rough material is almost never available. It is usually found in metamorphic contacts in limestone like the skarn zones in Tanzania or in Warren County, New York. This is a rare gem, but despite its rarity, it occurs in large stones from Sri Lanka. This material was long thought to be brown Peridot until it was investigated in 1952 and found to be a new mineral. The material gets is name from the old Sanskrit word for Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) "sinhala". Stones between 1-10 carats are not unheard of, but the 25.00! carat gem in this set is a MONSTER, and one of the best I've seen for the species. This particular stone is a very very very slightly included, rich golden yellow gem with a beautiful "Freeform" cut on it. A unique and rare gem on the market, and this particular stone is certainly top collector quality. The real bonus to this set is the fact that is comes with a beautiful piece of stream tumbled rough with a gorgeous soft straw color. Obviously the gem is the real star here, due to its amazing size and quality, but the set is certainly a worthwhile purchase for anybody interested in rare gems or unique rough and cuts. This set is valued at $3,600 retail.
