Item Description

Utah is known for its copper mining for sure, but few mineral specimens come out of these mines. Among the most famous of all Utah finds were the ball-shaped azurite clusters such as this great small cabinet Azurite from La Sal with a commanding presence and displaying a variety of textures! On the front this piece is composed of a large, somewhat rounded aggregate composed of countless 2 to 3mm Azurite crystals that sparkle from any incident light. They are highlighted by a few, crudely formed clusters of green Malachite in places/The opposite side has three prominent Azurite "roses" that are largely isolated and composed of very lustrous, 3 to 5 mm crystals that are somewhat tightly clustered yet the distinct crystals that make them up are distinguishable. These too glisten with any incident light on them! They are between 2.2 and 2.4 cm across and are highlighted in places by tiny, 1 to 2 mm, contrasting spots of green Malachite. The contrasting and variegated yellow-brown and tan colored Goethite matrix also shows patchy areas of Malachite. This is a very good and very colorful Azurite from La Sal, Utah! consists of at least 75 percent Azurite with a minor amount of small, crudely formed Malachite crystals on a botryoidal Limonite matrix. Harold Urish Collection, of Tucson. Valued $4500-5000
