Item Description

The Barite specimens from Frizington are some of the most iconic examples of the species ever found. These instantly recognizable old-time specimens are synonymous with the species, and can be found in old museum collections around the world, along with the best private collections. This piece is a superb quality, classic group of sharp, very lustrous, translucent to gemmy, thick, bladed, soft blue color Barite crystals associated with minor reddish-brown Hematite and tan rhombic Dolomite. If you look closely at the gemmy crystal on the right side of the piece, you can see there are several distinct internal phantoms that show up well with a just a bit of backlighting. The crystals are in excellent condition, with only VERY minor imperfections on the main group at the front of the piece. The thickness of the crystals is noteworthy, especially considering how gemmy the crystal is on the right side. I love how the piece sits on its own and displays beautifully without the aid of a base or clay. An excellent overall specimen from one of the most classic localities for Barite hands down. The piece was almost certainly mined during the 1800's. From the collection of Richard A. Kosnar (1946-2007), the famous dealer and collector from Colorado who was the namesake for the phosphate species Kosnarite. Priced at $5,000 retail in the inventory.
