Item Description

An attractive and fine quality example of these classic rich golden Barytes from Indian Head Rock, Montana. This particular specimen hosts several rather thick/blocky, well-formed, translucent, pseudo-rhombic-shaped crystals measuring up to 3.1 cm, free of matrix. When backlit, the Barytes show a beautiful internal color. Good condition overall, though I can see one "chip" on the left edge of one of the larger crystals, otherwise the only "damage" is around the periphery where the piece was removed from the pocket wall. The overall quality, color and crystal size is very good for the locality.
Originally part of the collection of Allen Alsky.
This specimen was pictured in the Butte Issue of the Mineralogical Record (Jan-Feb 2002 on Page 42, Fig. 39), making it all the more desirable and valuable. It should be noted that the piece was originally labeled as coming from the Mountain Con Mine, but is in fact from the Indian Head Rock locality, which is actually in Jefferson County, not in the Butte District.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 2887; 28.3.1.1 MT.1. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
