Item Description

A nice thumbnail specimen from the well-known lead zinc deposit at Picher. You won't find a lot of species from Picher, but the Calcites are as some of the most recognizable specimens from any US locality. This specimen comes from the collection of Willard W. Wulff (1904-1998) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, a prominent figure and collector of Colorado minerals. Wulff was one of the founding members of the Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society in 1936. You can read Willard's bio on the Mineralogical Record website here ( http://www.minrec.org/labels.asp?colid=1528 ). The underside of the 'Perky' Box in which it is housed features a hand-written label from Wulff with his name written out - meaning he self-collected it. A pair of attractive, fairly sharp, translucent soft yellow color scalenohedral crystals of Calcite sit on minor matrix. Good quality, VERY little damage and despite the fact that these Calcites were plentiful years ago, you don't see many of them now.
