Item Description

SUPERB, old-time Copper-in-Calcite specimen from the historic Quincy Mine in Michigan’s Copper Country. This fabulous miniature is crowned by a modified Calcite crystal that is 2.5 cm (one inch!) , corner-to-corner. Below that, on the matrix, are several elongated, scalenohedral Calcites. All the Calcites are richly included by bright, shiny Copper. What truly made me catch my breath when I unpacked this is how precise and distinct the Copper is within the Calcite, particularly in the large crystal. It is not only pretty and sparkly, but distinctly copper instead of just a coppery smudge within... You rarely see the Copper so well-defined, which makes this superior among these great combinations. For good reason, these Copper-in-Calcites have become true American classics, and this absolute beauty shows you exactly why. Superb in its size class, and valued $3500-4500. Premium miniatures of this material have always been desired, and most of these date to the heyday here in the 1800s, and are most certainly NOT contemporary. Significant competitive level specimen of this material. From our special collection sale of material from the collection of Richard Rossi. From our special collection sale, direct to auction, of choice material from the collection of Richard Rossi, East Coast collector and Mineralogical Record Fellow. Note that after we posted this we got the following information!: Just FYI, that Rossi copper-in-calcite in your new auction used to be
mine. I bought it from Rich Kosnar in 1974, for $150 (- a lot of money at the time) - Wendell Wilson
